Justice PC Ghosh appointed as India’s first Lokpal-

1) President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the first Lokpal of India.
2) The other four judicial members are Justice Dilip B Bhosale, Justice Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Justice Abhilasha Kumari, and Justice Ajay Kumar Tripathi.
3) He is a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) since June 2017.

3rd Indo-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction held in New-Delhi-

1) The 3rd Indo-Japan workshop is the follow-up of the deliberations held during the 1st Indo-Japan Workshop on DRR held on March 18-19, 2018 in New Delhi.
2) About 140 delegates from India and Japan attended the 3rd Indo-Japan Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction that was aimed at enhancing collaboration between research institutes, cities and the private sector of the two countries in this area.
3) The Japanese delegation included Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination, Cabinet Office, Akihiro Nakamura, Japanese Ambassador Kenji Hiramatsu, along with Government officials, domain experts from leading research institutes and various private companies working in the fields of Disaster Risk Reduction.

AWARDS & HONOURS


 Journalist and Indian Writer Raghu Karnad won Windham Campbell Prize –

1) Writer Raghu Karnad has won the Windham-Campbell prize under non-fiction category for his work Farthest Field: An Indian Story of the Second World War (2015).
2) In the book, Mr. Karnad has narrated the war through the experience of five Indian soldiers, including his grandfather.
3) Mr. Karnad, a graduate of Swarthmore College and St. Cross College, Oxford University, has won several awards for his writing, including the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar (2016).

Hindi Writer Leeladhar Jagudi to be honoured with Vyas Samman 2018-

1) Hindi writer Leeladhar Jagudi will be honoured with the Vyas Samman 2018 by the KK Birla Foundation for   his collection of poems “Jitne Log Utne Prem”.
2) Born in Dhangal village in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, Mr. Jagudi was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004 apart from other awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award, Akashvani National Award, Uttar Pradesh Hindi Institute and Uttarakhand Gaurav Samman.


Renowned Social Psychologist Ashis Nandy chosen for The Hans Kilian Award 2019-

1) Renowned social psychologist Ashis Nandy has been chosen as the recipient of the Hans Kilian Award for 2019.
2) The award was established by the Kohler Foundation and bears the name of the late social psychologist and psychoanalyst Hans Kilian.

Sai Praneeth finishes with silver at Swiss Open Badminton tournament 2019-

1) Indian shuttler Sai Praneeth did the unthinkable, beating the current Olympic Champion, Chen Long in the semi-finals of the Super 300 Swiss Open played at Basel, Switzerland.
2) Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth settled for a runner-up finish at the Swiss Open after losing the men's singles final to top seed and world number two Shi Yuqi.


2019 World Athletics World Championship to be held in Doha, Qatar-

1) The seventeenth edition of the IAAF World Championships is scheduled to be held between 27 September and 6 October 2019 in Doha, Qatar at the renovated multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium.
2) The IAAF World Athletics Championships, Doha 2019, commonly referred to as the World Championships in Athletics (WCH), is a biennial athletics event organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Originally held every four years, first in 1983, the current two-year cycle began in 1991.

OBITUARIES 


Veteran Journalist Darryl D’ Monte passes away at the age of 74-

1) Senior journalist and environmental activist Darryl D'Monte, who worked with leading English dailies, died at a hospital in Mumbai after a brief illness.
2) He had worked for ‘The Times of India’ and ‘Indian Express’. A book titled ‘Ripping the Fabric’ has been authored by him.
